White Chocolate Day
In full transparency, if I had my choice of dark, milk or white chocolate, white would be my very last choice. However, since I don’t have a choice, I eat white chocolate all the time! In fact, as I type away, I’m eating white chocolate peanut M&Ms right now. Yum!
In Costa Rica while on a chocolate tour, I learned about the caffeine content of white chocolate. It was nice to see that Nationaldaycalendar.com informs us with the same information that I learned on that tour. “…white chocolate does not contain cocoa solids, it is not chocolate in the strictest sense. During the process of manufacturing chocolate, the dark-colored solids of the cocoa bean separates from the fatty content. But unlike milk or dark chocolate, the solids are not reincorporated. As a result, white chocolate also does not contain as much caffeine or antioxidants.”
I have a problem with caffeine which is why I can’t eat much chocolate; I won’t sleep at night. About 3 years ago, when I learned that white chocolate had very little caffeine, I began my white chocolate candy collection. Whenever I am in the candy aisle at a store or at a gas station I search for all the candy bars in a white chocolate version. It’s like a treasure hunt - especially when I’m on road trip. Gas stations are notorious for having king size white chocolate varieties. Of course, the fun is not just in the finding of these treasures but in the tasting too! I try each candy to determine if it is worth stocking up on.
For some reason, I didn’t know that See’s Candy sold white chocolate. Maybe because I never went into the store looking for it. Fortunately for me, a couple of years ago I went into a See’s location and the nice saleslady asked me if I wanted a sample. I replied, “No thank you, I can only eat white chocolate.” Well, she made it a mission to tell me all about the varieties of white chocolate candies that See’s makes and gave me a sample of one to try. I was hooked.
Some people do not like the texture, the amount of fat content, the sweetness or the consistency (it melts differently than milk or dark) of white chocolate. For me, since it is chocolate, I will eat it! However, I don’t mind sharing that I have learned to be choosey about the white chocolate that I stock up on. The photo below is of the candy bars in my collection prior to my birthday. I have a box container made with mother of pearl and it measures 10x10x5 inches. I keep it stocked with my favorite white chocolate candy bars.
I love it when my friends and family find interesting ways to give me treats that do NOT include milk or dark chocolate. Like cake pops and trail mix! So on National White Chocolate Day, which is celebrated on Tuesday, September 22nd, be thoughtful and find some white chocolate treasures to share!
Speaking of white chocolate gifts, my daughter gave me a very expensive thoughtful pinch for my birthday. She wanted it to be a surprise so after we arrived at the mall, we separated so that she could get me a gift. We met up after we did our own shopping and when we started to go home I noticed she was in tears. Apparently she didn’t realize how much she was spending on my gift. When she found out, she tried to return it but the store would not accept the return. I felt so bad for her. I knew of her plans to buy other items for herself but she couldn’t because she ran out of money. One thing that brought me comfort was that she insisted that I would love her gift. At that time, I couldn’t imagine what it could be. When I opened the present on my birthday, I was surprised. It was a giant bag of white chocolate candy. I didn’t expect it. You know what else I didn’t expect? That I would fall in love with white chocolate gummy bears!
Happy National White Chocolate Day!
Pinches,
Barb
