They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. I am notorious for seeing ideas and copying them. And when people copy my ideas I am super flattered. My “movement” is to have thoughtfulness imitated throughout the world. I know that is a lofty goal but joy is contagious and we definitely experience joy when we see or learn of someone being thoughtful. I can only hope that thoughtfulness is a by-product of people imitating other people.

Since National Sibling Day is around the corner (April 10th), I thought it would be fitting to write about family dynamics. Siblings and family are subject matters that naturally intertwine. I am often asked if we’re supposed to write a thank you card when we receive a thank you gift. In other words, do we say thank you for the thank you? It would seem like a continuous cycle of thanking each other if that was the case. But I think the question is valid. Let’s dive into it together.
For so many years, I have kept the tradition of listening to Christmas music non-stop starting the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas night. In recent years, I have added another “Day After Thanksgiving” tradition. I pull out all of our Nutcracker items to mark the beginning of the celebration (more like fear) of my daughter’s upcoming dance schedule. Prior to COVID, the weeks leading up to Christmas were ONLY about Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy at the State Theater. The mugs, sweatshirts, decorations and the coveted fuzzy sock/slippers which have Nutcrackers printed all over them come out of hibernation to help me get in the mood. I’m giving credit to the socks for keeping me grounded during the whirlwind of a season.
I love the meme that is going around social media these days that says: “Anyone else feel like Halloween is unnecessary this year? I’ve been wearing a mask and eating candy for 7 months now, I don’t think I need a day dedicated to it anymore...” We all know what Halloween is about. Candy, candy, candy, right? Maybe costumes and parties too. But did you know that on October 31st our nation also celebrates National Knock Knock Joke Day? Isn’t that so cute? I mean, it’s appropriate. Knocking + Halloween. Although unfortunately, knocking on doors will be rare, if at all, this year. Boo!
Years ago I wrote a post entitled, “Happy Easy-ter” and it was about me doing the very minimum to prepare for that upcoming Easter holiday. In other words, I took the “easy” way out. I had to LOL because if I even had the energy to do 1/4 of what I thought was the easy celebration back then, I would be so lucky. This year, I took a MAJOR short cut on the Easter preparations!
A really good problem to have is that some of the teachers at my kids’ school actually read my blog. This means I can’t always write about what we are going to give them before a holiday because I want them to be surprised.
My daughter knew my friend Wendy was famous even before she actually became famous. I’ve known Wendy for years and so when my daughter would see her name or hear me talking about her, she would say, “Oh, she’s famous!” I never corrected my daughter when she would say this but I think she was mixing up Wendy with Reese Witherspoon. Which in her defense, is very easy to do! Both of them are adorable and both are savvy business women!
Recently, I was asked if I was going to put together a Thoughtful Pinch Gift Guide for the holiday season. My immediate reaction was, “Holy Smack Me In The Head With Flattery!” I’m so grateful that my friend Wendy asked me that question because not only was it a huge compliment, but she got me thinking about this awesome idea! I wasn’t sure if I could put together a gift guide but I knew one thing, it was definitely time to collaborate.
I love it when my daughter shares her creative genius with me! Thanks to her, the thoughtful pinches that we gave to the teachers this year for Thanksgiving Day were simple; uncomplicated. I can say that now but I have to tell you, right before I went out to buy the gifts, it became complicated.
I left my girlfriends in Sun Valley, ID today in order to make it back in time to tuck my kids into bed on the eve of their first day of school. I know that there will be many first days of school but missing the first day of school for my kids wasn’t an option for me. My son doesn’t like school very much. In fact, he hates school.
