I’m a cake person. I don’t discriminate against cakes based on their shape, flavor, store bought or homemade, the number of layers, frosting or no frosting. I am truly an inclusive, free-loving cake person.

If your current budget for gifts is zero dollars and the holiday season is making you panic, please chant this mantra with me - “Thoughtfulness is still possible.” People ask me, “What do I get someone who already has it all?” It’s tough to “top off” or surprise them with something they can’t already buy themselves. However, the number one thing that a person cannot buy is sweat equity. I mean, sure, they can pay people to do the labor, but they can’t buy the labor of LOVE and THOUGHTFULNESS that goes into a gift that is especially meant for them. So with COVID wiping out the economy for most, pretend the people on your holiday gift list are Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Oprah and Kylie Jenner. They all can afford anything and everything. What would you give to them if you were to going to spend the holidays together?
I just have to ask, is July the biggest drinking month of the year? There are so many national days that pertain to alcohol in the month of July: Anisette 7/2, Dive Bar 7/7, Pina Colada 7/10, Mojito 7/11, Grand Marnier 7/14, Daiquiri 7/19, Tequila 7/24, Wine & Cheese 7/25 and Scotch 7/27. If we celebrated each of those national days, it wouldn’t leave very many alcohol-free days in July.
Some people crinkle up their noses when they hear the words egg nog. For the rest of us, we say, “Bring it!” I suppose many people can’t imagine that drinking eggs can be tasty. However, I believe that any concoction that contains alcohol is worth at least a try.
According to my favorite resource, Nationaldaycalendar.com, National Fried Rice Day is celebrated on September 20th every year. Guess which company is behind this day. Of course, Benihana, the restaurant chain that uses 2,720,350 pounds of California grown rice each year. And why would Benihana want this day to be nationally celebrated? Well, to paraphrase Nationaldaycalendar.com: Benihana believes that high quality rice isn’t just another side dish. They believe that it is the foundational element of every meal.
Have I told you lately how much I love the hashtag #CelebrateEveryDay? It is because of Nationaldaycalendar.com - the creators of that great hashtag and also my favorite resource for information regarding these national days that I am able to have oodles of thoughtful opportunities to write about. It so happens that today, July 9th, is National Sugar Cookie Day!
My son needed help with math so we enlisted the help of a tutor last summer. Well, not only did we find someone who cares a lot about my son and his education but she is truly a wonderfully thoughtful person. I think my son had about three weeks of tutoring when Karen, the tutor, came to greet us at the door. She told me that her chickens on her farm were laying eggs like crazy.
’m a big fan of watching videos that use the “time-lapse” feature. I think it’s so cool to see, for example, the US Bank Stadium being built in only a few minutes even though, once they broke ground, it took over 2.5 years to build.
I was running on a treadmill in my basement when I randomly remembered that I may have red and white popcorn containers made with lightweight cardboard. As soon as I was done running, I opened up the cabinet and sure enough there were twenty-one popcorn containers. Yippee! The colors fit my theme for Valentine’s Day.
