10 Random Things I'm Grateful For Daily

I started going to another eyebrow gal because my favorite had to move out of state. When this new esthetician saw me again only two weeks after she first waxed my eyebrows, she said, “I feel like I just waxed your eyebrows.” I complained to her that I will be getting my eyebrows waxed every two weeks because they grow so quickly. To that she replied, “Hey, be grateful that you can grow hair because it’s easy to remove but hard to grow.” I realized just then that having fast growing brows is something random to be grateful for.

Family Love

Lately I have been experiencing some very trying times within my family. And not with just one or two members. Imagine how low my self-confidence is and how high my self-doubt is. From deductive reasoning one may come to the conclusion that since I am the common denominator for all of these tiffs, I am therefore the problem. But I am going to insist that I’m a lover not a fighter.

Tiny But Mighty

Whenever I use the phrase “tiny but mighty” I am channeling the cartoon character Mighty Mouse; a small superhero mouse who always made a big impact. I think “tiny but mighty” was one of my favorite phrases of 2021 because I used it to label anything that seemed small but could beat the odds and exceed expectations. Well, get ready - Thoughtful Pinch is going thru a “tiny but mighty” change.

Falling Off the Wagon

There is so much talk about New Year’s Resolutions which is inevitably followed by conversations about falling off the wagon. People, who can expect to do ANYTHING on the first of January? We are hungover, football games are on TV and many businesses are closed. It’s a recipe for being a sloth on a couch. Why would anyone think starting a new habit on January 1st was totally reasonable?

Time To Get Spiritual

I waited until the last minute to decide which habit I would work on for the 365 days in 2021. I knew that I was already going to try to ride the Peloton bike once or twice a week and I knew that I was going to try to cook more meals. But I needed something that I could do every day; a habit for 365 days. It had to be something small, almost like a “no brainer” or hard to skip. In doing this habit daily, the year’s effort would add up to be significant. More importantly, the habit should have the potential to continue for years.

Oprah's Pinch

By the time I went to Oprah’s 2020 Vision event in St. Paul, I had been meditating for at least 5 minutes a day for 10 days in row because that is my 365 (366 for Leap Year) for 2020.  I often heard that the benefits of mediation were immediate but I wasn’t expecting it to be truly… immediate.  The Oprah event exceeded all of my expectations because: 1. I didn’t have any expectations except to see her live on stage and 2. meditating cleared up some junk just in time to see this show.  My mind was so open that it soaked up every morsel of wisdom that Oprah had to offer.

In Scott Stump’s article, Navy Seal’s Advice to Grads” he writes about U.S. Navy Admiral William H. McCraven’s advice to his alma mater in 2014. McCraven said, "If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter.
